Defence wins titles: 5 Fantasy Premier League defenders for gameweek 11

Despite three consecutive draws and being anemic in front of goal, Tottenham Hotspur have still given up the English Premier League’s fewest goals. A difficult contest against Arsenal awaits them in the North London Derby in gameweek 11.

Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny and Tottenham’s Kyle Walker are the Fantasy Premier League’s top defenders, respectively. Should either get into your fantasy team this week with a big derby on the cards?

Daley Blind – Manchester United

Games: 9; Assists: 2; Clean sheets: 4; Total FPL points: 46

Daley Blind is a Fantasy Premier League bargain. With the third most points of any defender, Blind is a mere £5.7 million. In gameweek 10, Blind obtained his fourth clean sheet of the season as Manchester United shutout Burnley.

Next up is an away trip to Swansea, and United should be good enough to earn another draw at the very least.

Dejan Lovren – Liverpool

Games: 8; Goals: 2; Clean sheets: 1; Total FPL points: 29

At less than £5.0m, Dejan Lovren is another bargain of the week, especially as defenders with more FPL points begin to go down with injury. Lovren continues to be a mixed bag at the back for Liverpool. One minute he is making a goal conceding error and the next he is scoring a thunderous header.

Last week, Lovren tallied seven points for the second time in three games. In fact, the centre-back has obtained 16 in his last three. Not bad, especially for a defender that can fill in if your team is facing an injury crisis.

Joel Matip – Liverpool

Games: 8; Goals: 1; Clean sheets: 1; Total FPL points: 25

An Alternative to Lovren, Joel Matip is showing that Premier League teams don’t need to spend heavily to find quality centre-backs. Arriving from Schalke on a free transfer over the summer, Matip has started Liverpool’s last eight fixtures in defence.

Tall and classy on the ball, Matip scored seven points in gameweek 10, the second time he had tallied that number in three weeks. Sure, Liverpool don’t keep many clean sheets, only one this season, but their next eight fixtures are all winnable and are all opportunities for Liverpool’s defence to get another shutout.

Charlie Daniels – Bournemouth

Games: 10; Clean sheets: 3; Total FPL points: 39

Charlie Daniels and Bournemouth are coming off a poor showing at the weekend. However, the defender has tallied some impressive weekly points in recent time. In fact, the previous two weeks saw him score 19 points.

Bournemouth take on an extremely incompetent Sunderland side at home in gameweek 11. A fourth clean sheet could be on the cards as Sunderland have scored the fewest goals (seven) in the Premier League this term. Meanwhile, Bournemouth have only given up 14.

Laurent Koscielny – Arsenal

Games: 9; Goals: 2; Clean sheets: 4; Totay FPL points: 53

It is difficult to not select Koscielny. The Gunners’ defender has been sterling all season. He currently leads all defenders in points scored and based on that, deserves a spot in your team.

Is the Frenchman cooling off? It doesn’t look like it despite only tallying two points last week. Even though Arsenal take on Spurs in gameweek 11, he is still a good choice, especially with Tottenham struggling in front of goal.

Bonus goalkeeper

Tom Heaton – Burnley

Games: 10; Saves: 57; Total FPL points: 50

Tom Heaton continues to be the highest scoring goalkeeper, but only costs a mere £4.7m.

Last week against Manchester United, Heaton made 11 saves and scored 11 points, his most in a gameweek this term.

Burnley battle Crystal Palace and West Brom in back-to-back weeks. It is a good time to get the Burnley goalkeeper in your team.
