Romelu Lukaku is undergoing a medical in California today that will seal his £75 million transfer to Manchester United. It appears the Lukaku Manchester United transfer is being made possible by the striker’s relationship with Paul Pogba.
It was widely expected that Lukaku would move to Chelsea, as they look to cover outgoing forward Diego Costa, but United, in need of attacking options themselves, have swooped for the Everton forward. The two sides have agreed terms with Wayne Rooney going the other way once the medical has been successfully completed.
It was Pogba that, to all intents and purposes, sealed the Lukaku Manchester United transfer. He has become firm friends over the years with Lukaku and they have been holidaying together over the summer in the States. It was his influence and encouragement that has turned Lukaku’s attention to Old Trafford, rather than Stamford Bridge, where they will link up together in the red of Manchester United. The two players also share the same agent, Mino Raiola.
Lukaku will stay in America after the medical and to hook up with the rest of the Manchester United squad when they fly out on Sunday to prepare for their three-week tour of the USA.
The signing of Lukaku will likely signal the end of the chase for Real Madrid forward Alvaro Morata, who will now likely be courted by Chelsea. This move may also scupper hopes Manchester United have of landing Chelsea defensive midfielder Nemanja Matic. Although they still want to bring in more new signings before the season starts having only Victor Lindelof prior to the Lukaku deal.
