Clubs Fight over Liverpool Flop

Several clubs are said to be fighting over the signing of Liverpool’s Serbian winger, Lazar Markovic.

Markovic, 23, was signed for £20 million from Benfica three years ago, but has made just 34 appearances for Liverpool over that time, and indeed over the last two seasons has been sent out on loan, to Fenerbahce, Sporting Lisbon and Hull City.

His Anfield career now looks almost certainly over, after he was left out of the squad for their trip to Hong Kong, and boss Jurgen Klopp admitted in an interview to the Liverpool Echo “With Lazar, it’s no secret that if he finds a club then we will negotiate. It was like this last year too”.

Liverpool are accepting the fact that they will make a loss on Markovic, and are prepared to sell the player for around £8 million. A host of Premier League and Championship clubs are interested in taking on the young winger, with Watford and Hull City leading the way. As mentioned, Markovic spent time at Hull on loan last season, but is likely to want to stay in the Premier League, and Watford would be of interest to him, playing a fast expansive game with a creative midfield central to that. Aston Villa, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley are all also said to be considering an offer and joining the fray for the player.

Markovic will want a swift exit from Anfield to resurrect his career, being one of a few players who have arrived at Liverpool with huge potential, but left with the label ‘flop’ next to their name.
