The Championship : What to look forward to this weekend

The Championship remains a mystery as no team looks to be running away with the division, and a host of big teams starting to find form and move into position as the chase for the Premier League gathers pace.

Blood and Thunder at Pride Park

Derby County meet deadly rivals Nottingham Forest in a game that rarely fails to live up to its billing, with goals, sending offs and incidents galore being part and parcel of a game between two teams trying desperately to reclaim the Premier League place they both feel is truly theirs. Pride Park usually generates a good atmosphere and when these teams clash, the place is set alight with hostility and a genuine dislike of each other. Both teams are mid table currently and have suffered good and bad results along the way – three points here will be as well received for bragging rights as they will in their respective promotion push. Very much worth a watch.

West Midlands battle of the fallen giants

Another mouth watering clash set for this weekend, and arguably bigger than the writers choice as above, is a game between second place Wolverhampton Wanderers and seventh place Aston Villa at Molineux. Villa have been on the charge recently, winning their last four games and eradicating memories of a very poor start. Wolves themselves have won three of their last four, though have struggled to keep their excellent early season form going, but remain in the van atop the Championship league table and seem set to be in the promotion mix. This is another game that will have no holds barred and will have a crackling atmosphere inside a rammed stadium. Should be a thriller.

Gap between top and bottom seems set to widen

Many of this weekends matchups pit teams at the top of the division against teams from the lower reaches, with form suggesting that this is not the weekend for those clubs towards the bottom to pick up points. Leaders Cardiff City travel to 22nd placed Birmingham City, whilst 4th placed Bristol City have a comfortable looking home fixture against Burton Albion. Rock bottom Bolton entertain Sheffield Wednesday in a difficult looking game whilst Reading, just a point outside the bottom three, travel to Leeds United. These games all look set to be on many football coupons this weekend!!

It will be another fascinating weekend of Championship football, and we look forward to bringing you more reviews and previews from this chaotic League!
