Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho upset over missed chances in loss to Chelsea

Chelsea handed Manchester United their second loss in three Premier League fixtures on Sunday afternoon. The Red Devils were beaten thanks to an Alvaro Morata header in the 55th minute. The Blues held on for a 1-0 win.

Manchester United’s day of missed chances

Manchester United managed just two shots on target during the match as Chelsea out shot them 8-2. It was the Red Devils’ inability to finish their chances that manager Jose Mourinho was upset with following the match.

“We had chances and they had chances and with the first goal they were able to bring more people to defend,” Mourinho said. “We tried to change the direction of our game, we created chances to equalise but we couldn’t.”

Mourinho wasn’t happy with his team’s inability to play with their heads. The manager felt his side were too emotionally after conceding the opening goal.

The club’s big summer signing, Romelu Lukaku, managed just one shot during the 90 minutes. Chelsea’s defenders did a brilliant job of corralling the former Stamford Bridge player. Chelsea’s goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois, was called into action three times compared to David De Gea making seven saves.

A race for second place

Manchester United’s loss leaves them eight points behind league leaders Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side defeated Arsenal, 3-1, earlier in the day.

Meanwhile, Tottenham also won on Sunday, drawing level once more with Manchester United on points. Chelsea are just one point back now in fourth place.
