Manchester United Player news: Zlatan Ibrahimovic

Ibrahimovic joined Manchester United on a free contract in 2016 from Paris Saint-Germain. The striker scored 29 goals in 53 appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Ibrahimovic suffered a horrific knee injury at the end of the 2016-17 against Anderlecht. He returned to the club in August 2017 and signed a new one-year contract. However, he has only played sparingly this term.

Ibrahimovic is expected to move to North America’s Major League Soccer. He has been linked with Los Angeles Galaxy for some time. However, with the new MLS season kicking off three weeks ago, it is unknown if the Galaxy would have the financial wiggle room to sign him now.

MLS uses a salary cap structure and transparency with clubs’ spending power and player contracts is lacking. The Galaxy, who finished bottom of MLS in 2017, could sign Ibrahimovic. However, he could move to the Galaxy’s new city rivals Los Angeles FC.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho hasn’t played Ibrahimovic since December, when the player was substituted against Burnley. Ibrahimovic’s lack of playing time is one reason the 36-year-old is desperate to leave the club.

Ibrahimovic has recently stated he would come out of international retirement to play for Sweden at this summer’s World Cup. There is no word on whether the national team wants the star striker to return to the fold, or if they would even pick him. However, Ibrahimovic’s pending arrival in MLS could see him gain playing time and fitness in time for a World Cup call-up.

What do you think of the Manchester United player news? Should Ibrahimovic’s contract be terminated or should he have more playing time at Manchester United?
