The new Manchester City away kit was officially released Wednesday, July 24. The kit draws inspiration from Manchester City’s famous 1999 Division 2 playoff win over Gillingham. The shirt does offer slight changes from that top nearly 20 years ago as the new Manchester City away kit features thin yellow and light blue vertical stripes on a dark blue top.
New Manchester City away kit released
Manchester City’s 2018-19 home kit has been criticised for being rather bland. The home kit features the club’s traditional light blue shirt with white shorts and navy blue socks. The template used by Nike has been reproduced for several teams around Europe, however.
The new Manchester City away kit breaks the mold used by Nike this season on many of the shirts produced for top clubs.
Club’s official website outlined the new creative design behind the new kits.
“Design creative comes from the 1998/9 away shirt which was worn when City memorably beat Gillingham in the Second Division play-off final at Wembley to make an immediate return to Division One,” the website post read.
“After being 2-0 down at the end of normal time, City scored two dramatic injury-time goals and then went on to win on penalties. The match is seen by many of as the start of the modern day revival of the Club.”
Manchester City supporters, football shirt enthusiasts, and collectors have all responded positively toward the new top.
